Family Business
This is the page where we'll take care of "family business" (information important to the members of our church family).

August, 2008
Elder News
Central’s Elders would like you to know that effective July 1, Jerry McColgin assumed chairmanship of the elders. Doug McConnell has served in this position for five years, but recently his job has required significant out-of-town travel. This makes chairing the Elder board a logistical challenge.

Jerry McColgin, the new chairman, serves along with Doug, Mark Adams, Craig Druetzler and Greg Filson.

The Realities of Church Building Security
If you have a key to the church, please read.
We’re blessed to have a nice facility where we can gather in Christian fellowship, for a variety of purposes, and at any time during the week. We’ve tried diligently to make the facilities available not only to members, but to the communities we serve.

We’re at a point in time where the realities of today’s world prompt us to be more proactive in taking precautions to protect not only our members, but our assets. The difficult truth is that in the past few months there have been repeated thefts of fairly significant items from the church building such as electronic keyboards, numerous other pieces of worship ministry equipment, and even an electric fan. The thefts go far beyond an occasional missing tea-towel or rolls of plastic bags. We must be good stewards of not only the building, but all of the contents.

On August 4, all of the locks on exterior church doors will be changed. New keys will be signed out initially to staff and elders, with additional keys available for check-out and return at the reception desk. If you are leading a ministry and believe you need an assigned key, please speak with Bill Workman, Director of Facilities. At the same time the locks are being changed, new building security code(s) will be implemented.

A key policy is being drafted for future use. If you would like to contribute your thoughts or express your concern, please feel free to contact Bill Workman (bworkman@cccCarmel.org or 846-1230).

Shelley & Phil Harris: Answering the Call
If you tried to make up a classic story about someone answering the call God has placed on their lives, you couldn’t improve on the real story of Shelley and Phil. As Central’s interim worship ministry team, they have consistently shown not only their musical depth and talent, but the obvious Fruits of the Spirit they produce through their ministry. But it’s never been just about the music, although they are both clearly gifted in this area.

Phil knows his gift and his passion is preaching, a call he has felt even before he was ordained by the Assembly of God. Shelley… well, could it be more obvious how she is gifted? Not only is she an extraordinary singer, she is a clinician and teacher, trainer of worship leaders, singers, musicians and choirs. In the ministry they share, it’s evident their gifts are complementary. As they have grown in their relationship to each other and with Christ, their ministry has grown as well. They’re now at the point where they’re ready to risk “getting out of the boat” to answer God’s next call on their lives.

What does that mean? Nashville, Tennessee. Seems like an obvious move with this much musical talent on tap. Nashville is an area that’s exploding with growth, which means more people looking for purpose and meaning in their lives. They’re looking for the kind of direction only God can provide, working through those He has called and who have answered. That’s Shelley & Phil Harris – two who have heard and answered. They’ve begun putting into play their plans to become involved in one of 22 recent Assembly of God church plants in Nashville, but with a unique twist. Their vision is to facilitate a school for ministry within one of the existing new church plants, with a focus on worship ministry training. “We’re not all about doing buildings or putting Jesus in a box. We’re about helping people grow instead of growing programs.” That’s why while Phil will have a primary preaching role, Shelley will oversee a worship ministry with a decidedly outreach focus. Together they will take the proactive approach to teach, train, equip, empower and then send those they pastor.

What does this mean for us at Central? Yet another way God orchestrates his perfect timing shines through this story. While Shelley and Phil make this transition, they will need flexibility to move around, doing whatever it takes for the call to be realized. That includes selling their home, relocating and juggling their existing musical careers. At the same time, Central’s worship ministry search team hopes to narrow down the list of candidates to permanently fill this role. While all of this is taking shape, Shelley & Phil will continue to be available to us as much as possible until Central’s position is filled. It’s really a win-win. And the best part of it is we’ll all have another great reason to visit Nashville when it’s all said and done!

Central’s Pictorial Directory: It’s Nearly A “Wrap”
Doesn’t it seem like ages ago when many of us posed to have our pictures taken for Central’s pictorial directory? And you’re wondering, “Where is that directory?”

Going into the directory project, the intention was to have as close to 100% participation as possible. For whatever reasons, many Central members just had a difficult time scheduling an appointment to have their photos taken for the directory. Multiple special appointment times were scheduled for pictures to be taken in the fellowship hall when members would already be at church service, but even at that we fell far short in participation. We decided to keep trying, aiming for the most accurate representation of our church family. Time passed, reminder calls were made, new sitting times were arranged – and still there were too many members un-photographed to proceed with finishing the directory.

So where are we now? Between a rock and a hard place----and we’re at the rock! We’re going to have to go with what we now have. The images already taken will be sent to the printer in early August, and the directory will be available in early fall. Thank you for your understanding. And if you’re one of those who did have your picture taken, look forward to seeing how much you’ve changed in the past few months!

Serve One Another
The Elders are looking for people to help take and serve communion to those who are homebound. Individuals are needed from each Community to serve home communion. It is a simple way to serve those who can’t meet with us on Sunday morning. People confined to their homes often feel left out. What better way to let them know they are still part of our family.

It’s important we know who in each Community is available to be the connection point for home communion needs.

If you are interested to fill this position in your Community, please contact Paul Backer (pbacker@cccCarmel.org) or Doug McConnell (mcdoug727@sbcglobal.net).

Home Communion Needs
If you need to have communion brought to your home, please contact the church office (846.1230) or any one of the Elders. We want to make sure we are meeting this need for you.
